Fairfield operates under a Representative Town Meeting (RTM) form of government, with five members elected to represent residents of each of the 10 voting districts of the Town. The administration of Town affairs is vested in the three-member
Board of Selectmen, who serve as executive policy makers, and by right of office, act as members of the RTM. The First Selectman is the Town's chief elected officer and highest elected official.

Many areas that we know as "open space" in Fairfield were acquired with allocation of state or federal funds;[1] and the Town of Fairfield uses tax dollars to manage over 1,100 acres of open space land comprising over 50 diverse parcels of land. Of these parcels, approximately 80% are captioned as designated for “wildlife conservation” and/or “wildlife protection” within the Conservation Commission Open Space Program.
These open spaces are used every day of the year by an active citizenry from within Fairfield... but also enjoyed by many who travel significant distances and from many states to avail themselves of the broad and unmatched recreational opportunities these public properties offer. Regardless of specifics of home residence, all citizens and visitors have contributed to the costs of obtaining and maintaining public open spaces in Fairfield. As such, it is important that non-Fairfield citizens ensure that their opinions on this issue are acknowledged: all are encouraged to sign the petition.

For Fairfield residents, it is critical that the Representative Town Meeting (RTM) members who represent your district are aware of how you feel on this issue. As constituents who vote to seat these individuals to govern our town, you have the right to have your voice heard and acted upon. A brief phone call or simple Email will help ensure that your concerns are placed on the RTM agenda. Do you know who your representatives are?
Fairfield is divided into 10 voting districts, each holding five seats in the RTM.
